About Pakostane

The lake and the sea

In the immediate vicinity of Pakoštane, or more precisely across the coast road, 2 km from the sea, there is a natural phenomenon of the freshwater lake Vrana.

The lake is about 14 km long and 4 km wide, surrounded by fertile fields. Northwards from the lake, today one can find the remains of the old city and Turkish caravanserai (roadside inn for caravans) Vrana. Once, the city was ruled by the very first Croatian rulers. In the Middle Ages it was under the rule of the Knights Hospitallers and Templars.

The Vrana lake is a natural phenomenon that has much to offer: it is an ornithological reservation with variety of protected bird species, e.g. herons; only 2 km from the sea, anglers can catch freshwater fishes, and horse riding around the lake is ideal for the nowdays nomads.
